Last Minute Holiday Gift Ideas: PlanToys Wooden Toys

At our home Santa always brings wooden or handmade gifts from his workshop, because it is my excuse to buy the quality gifts that I love. With one week until Christmas, hopefully you have your gifts figured out, but if you are looking for some last minute ideas or are thinking ahead for the new year, I would highly recommend PlanToys. For over 30 years, PlanToys has been recycling the wood from expired rubber wood trees to create beautiful wooden toys that inspire children’s imaginations we have collected a number of items over the years that we love. This season we were provided a couple of new products for toddlers and children to review that we can happily add to our recommendation list.

PlanToys ClockNow that my oldest is in kindergarten we are trying to master reading a clock. I never realized how confusing it is to explain to a child who is still learning very simple math and fractions how the clock is broken down into 12 hours and 60 minutes! The PlanToys Activity Clock is a good tool to start to visually recognize key times of the day with the picture cards provided and she is working hard at trying to master the minute hand and how that coincides with our daily routine. I also pictured our PlanToys Tie-Up Shoe above that we got this past year and that my daughter used to learn how to tie her shoe laces so that Daddy would buy her lace shoes before school started. Her determination and a useful education tool got her a pair of Hello Kitty lace sneakers, so this is another we would recommend for young school-aged children.

I love that PlanToys puts so much emphasis on developmental milestones and education and I do not know what it is about a classic wooden toy that seems more educational to me than a plastic one with flashing lights and buttons (although I will confess we have a handful of those as well). Perhaps it is the fact that it gives kids the chance to learn, absorb and explore on their own rather than having lights distract them one direction or another. Or maybe they can hear a parent, sibling or even their own voice better as they interact with and talk about the toy. Whatever the reason they are durable, look great in a toy bin or on the shelf and will provide hours of fun.

Plan Toys Alphabet A-ZLittle brother is working on letter recognition and big sister happily jumps in to help with the Alphabet A-Z blocks so that she can show off her spelling and sight word skills. These blocks are flat, so they are appropriate for spelling out simple words, but do not stand upright particularly well although you may be able to get a domino crash out of them if balanced on the right surface. He liked these enough that we added the Numbers set to his holiday and birthday wishlist so perhaps we will have more PlanToys to add to our growing collection this year!
