Have you ever had diaper stash envy? Or perhaps you have an insatiable yearning for a certain brand or style of diaper that you cannot rationalize buying for financial or practical reasons (like already having five dozen diapers for one little bottom). I have experienced different levels of diaper stash want over the years and I am regularly put in the difficult decision of whether or not to purchase more diapers. It may be a new product or print release, the greener grass on the other side of another brand or cloth diaper style’s fence or just for the heck of it. There are many ways new fluff is lured into our shopping carts.
My most recent “do I buy more cloth diapers?” dilemma has been deciding whether to add some additional prefolds or all-in-ones to my stash for a less time-consuming routine. This need started eating at me when we put our home on the market a few months ago and I knew I wanted to cut back on how much time I spent on my chores to make time for keeping the house “show ready” and to simply try and keep my stress levels tolerable. Then the past two weeks we have been unpacking and settling in to our new home and I feel like I have hardly had time to put my feet up let alone relax. I keep looking at Diaper Rite cotton prefold cloth diapers online wondering if I should take the plunge and order a dozen– after all it’s only $30, plus they are perfect for my go-to newspaper fold and I already have covers.
Although it would not be a bad idea to add some prefolds back in to my stash since they are affordable and versatile, I need to ask myself if I will be fine with my old diapering routine once the dust settles from moving and unpacking in the next couple of weeks. Or perhaps the lower stress for a short amount of time would be worth a mere $30 investment. Sometimes the “make life easier” factor can be reason enough for a purchase to help us keep our sanity and it can easily override the “we have enough cloth diapers” reasoning.
Whether it’s a specific diaper, brand you have not tried, or the idea of having larger quantities of a single style of cloth diaper, there is always a hope that there is something better, easier or more desirable. The bottom line is that I need to remind myself the grass is always going to be greener on the other side and I will rarely need more diapers. There will be times where I can rationalize a purchase if it is for my enjoyment, a child’s new wetting pattern or similar need, and if I have an upcoming baby shower.
My husband and I put a fun little flow chart together for me to reference when I come across yet another must-have-more-cloth-diapers moment and hopefully it will also help you when making these difficult decisions or simply make you smile. Now ask yourself should I buy more cloth diapers?
