It is true, I have a secret second life as a food superhero. My superpower? Gardening! We moved late in the planting season this summer, but I was fortunate enough to get some vegetable starts at the farmer’s market and local nursery to try and play catch up as best as I could. I love the good feeling that gardening gives me, encouraging my kids to eat fresh foods from our garden and to show them the miracle that lies in a seed. Cooking in the kitchen together is a favorite activity of ours, especially when we get to pick our own veggies from the garden, and I feel that gardening, shopping and cooking together helps teach my kids about healthy ingredients and making healthy choices.
My garden this year is smaller than last year’s, but I managed to get three different types of tomatoes, lots of cucumber plants, peppers, spinach, lettuce and beans, and I am excited to watch them grow. Our landlords already had a long row of strawberry plants and a blueberry bush in the yard so we are also excited to reap their sweet harvests this summer. The climate here is quite different from the Midwest, so it will be interesting to see what thrives here and what pests I will have to tackle.
There are a lot of different ways parents seem to be getting more conscious and involved in what their families eat, between controversy of high fructose corn syrup, hype about hydrogenated oils and fears of genetically modified foods that are getting people thinking. We cannot control everything that we come in contact with, but we can try and make the healthiest, most educated choices we can and take a step towards change.
