Summer was in full swing when we left Missouri so when planning one last gathering with friends, the splash park seemed like the perfect location. The local park had just opened up for the season the week before and everyone was eager to suit up and enjoy the water and sunshine. It was a bitter-sweet occasion since it was also our last get together with our friends before hitting the road, but I wanted to leave on a happy, playful note so a pool party seemed perfect.
As you many know, I have strong prefrerences for natural and organic products and have tried a variety of brands, but not all of my friends have the same views or budget. When I learned about the new Banana Boat Natural Reflect sunscreen line, I was 1) excited that a natural option would be readily accessible, even to those of us living in the middle of rural Missouri to grab at the local grocery store and 2) it was a product that I could probably get all of my friends to try.
When doing my sunscreen research at the local Missouri “mall-mart” a few weeks ago, I discovered that the new Banana Boat sunscreen was within a few cents of its conventional competetors so budget would not be an issue for families to make a more natural choice and I think that the natural ingredients offer families a better option than many formulas on the market. The sunscreen is available in three formulas: regular, kids and baby. The main difference between the versions seems to be the thickness which contributes to its level of water resistence. The kids and baby formulas are very water resistent and leave a whitish sheen to your skin, but it can serve as a good visual reminder of when it needs to be reapplied.
Along the same lines as my recent article on thinking less “black and white” about cloth diapering, I also feel that every step towards more natural and organic choices is something to embrace. Not everyone will choose what you consider to be the best options for your family, but the more we as consumers support natural and organic products and encourange our friends to make the switch, the more products will become available at more affordable prices.
I am still thinking of the yummy spread of chicken salad sandwiches, fruit, pretzels, brownies, other treats that filled our tummies and the amazing people I was priviledged to have met during my five years in Missouri. During those five years we made our first home, I became a mother, survived a severe car accident, discovered cloth diapering and fell in love with green living and parenting, and made many dear friends. Missouri taught me to truly adapt to wherever life sent me and that my family and friends were the most important regardless of where I lived.
I still have dozens of pictures to upload and cherish from that afternoon once the movers deliver our things, but I was able to capture a handful of friends who attended on my camera phone I have shared above.
