Finding Balance as a Blogger #NaBloPoMo #BlogHer

Making family time is important to me. How do you balance your children, relationship and work life? ~Ricki Lake (guest prompt)

Honestly, I am still trying to figure it out! When my blog articles are done for the day, my sink is full of dirty dishes and I realize I forgot to switch the laundry from the night before. When my house is spotless and I giggle in excitement as I cross off those long-forgotten items on my home organization to-do list, I realize it’s 10PM and the hope of getting an article done for the night are slim. After all, the baby will wake to feed overnight, my husband leaves for physical training and work at the crack of dawn and the week isn’t going to slow down. Oh yeah, and I have a husband that doesn’t want to be ignored the few hours he is able to be home in the evening either! So it’s tough and I often feel stretched thin.

I have come to realize, however, that when I make an effort to set aside quality time for my kids, husband and own interests –outside of the have to’s like housework, preschool, gymnastics and such– that things fall into place a lot better. Isn’t it funny how we can get caught up in getting the to-dos done that we become less productive and less creative as a result? Sometimes a bubble bath when you should be finishing up your chores or that spur-of-the-moment craft project you have been wanting to tackle for months can be just the rejuvenation you need to get things back in balance. Clearly easier said than done, but the realization of this is the first step, right?

I think you could compare the balance as a mother, wife and blogger to a see-saw. Except you’re standing in the middle of the see-saw and are trying to avoid leaning too far one way or another. If you put too much weight in one leg, you let up and shift it slightly toward the other to avoid falling. I think that balance is an action that takes a consistent, purposeful effort. If you think you’ve achieved it, than you have something else waiting to knock you off your feet.

What does balance mean to you and what have you found the most helpful in achieving it the best you can?
