Now that I am cloth diapering a newborn I am really getting a better picture of the full range of one size diapers. Most one size diapers and covers are too large if not very bulky on a newborn and small infant, but one I found that was a little less bulky and fit my 7 lb. newborn after his umbilical cord was the Sweet Pea One Size diaper cover.
I received this cover a few months ago and had initially started my review on my 35+ pound toddler and it was one of my favorite one size covers I had used on her and it still fit her unlike some other one size covers in our stash. It has a little stretch to it and the thickness of the PUL is sturdy, yet avoids being too stiff, and has a crossover tab for smaller or skinnier babies. Although I wouldn’t recommend using it before your baby’s umbilical cord stump falls off, it should fit most babies from around the 7 pound range (without handfuls of extra fabric) which is what my son weighed at two weeks after his umbilical cord fell off and we put it to the newborn test.
It will have a little bulk on a newborn, but this will ultimately depend on the fitted or prefold diaper you use it over and newborns grow so quickly it won’t be for long. There is a small tab on the back of the diaper for line drying, which is a feature also available in their one size diapers, and the double leg gussets provide good leak protection, especially on skinny, newborn thighs. So there you have it. A truly one size size range that fits a newborn and a larger toddler at $10.95 a pop. Not too shabby.
