Recreate Spa Beauty Treatments for Pennies Using Arm & Hammer Baking Soda

Baking soda is a staple in most people’s homes, whether it is kept in the pantry for baking or used in the fridge for deodorizing. I am sure many of you green or budget-conscious moms also use it in cleaning or laundry applications as well. But have you ever thought to use it in your beauty regimen? I hadn’t. I always love to learn how to use products like baking soda in multiple ways, because it’s something I always have on hand, is affordable, and unitaskers are just that: unitaskers. The more applications a multitasking ingredient like baking soda has, the more enthusiastic I am to find new applications.

I currently use or have used baking soda to deodorize my fridge, carpets and shoes as well as in baking, but never in the bathroom so I was up for the challenge. Although I am not brave enough to use it as a natural toothpaste (not a flavor I’m a fan of) I loved the recipes or “tips” from Arm & Hammer for using it as a facial and body scrub, soothing bath soak and to use it with your favorite shampoo to get icky build up out of your hair.

The beauty recipes below are a great way to use it in a spa-like application that you don’t need to pay a fortune for and that you can do at any time without having to buy fancy products ahead of time at the store. I love baths and my favorite application is their Soothing Bath Soak (1/2 cup in warm water to neutralize acids on the skin and help wash away oil and perspiration) to which I added lavender essential oil (which you already have and use in your homemade wipes solutions, right? ;-)). I love using bath salts in the tub, but don’t use them every time, because they aren’t cheap so this is my new more affordable alternative!

Facial Glow
  • Mix 3 parts Arm & Hammer Baking Soda with 1 part water. Cleanse skin as usual, followed by the gentle scrub. (Be careful to avoid eye area). Rinse with warm water. Leaves skin feeling nourished and refreshed.
Exfoliating Pedicure
  • Blend 2 tablespoons of Arm & Hammer Baking Soda in a basin of warm water. After a nice soak, make a scrub using 3 parts Arm & Hammer Baking Soda and 1 part water. Follow with an application of a rich moisturizer and a warm towel foot wrap. Let sit for 5 – 10 minutes. Feet will feel smooth and clean.
Brightening Manicure
  • Dip brush into Arm & Hammer Baking Soda and scrub nails and cuticles. Make a paste of 3 parts Arm & Hammer Baking Soda to 1 part water. Rub in a gentle, circular motion over hands and fingers to exfoliate and smooth. Rinse clean with warm water and apply polish as usual.

Samples of the products mentioned in the review were provided for this review by Arm & Hammer through Mom Central Consulting. No other compensation was received and the views and opinions are my own.
