Seventh Generation Liquid Laundry Products, $1 Off Coupon Code & Giveaway (12/20)

As a military family we cut optical brighteners from our laundry detergent before we had babies or cloth diapers to launder. Why are optical brighteners banned from military uniforms and a big “no-no” for cloth diaper laundry? Optical brighteners are basically an ingredient in most detergents that coat fabrics to create the illusion that your clothes are brighter and cleaner. So, as exciting as the results may be to a naked eye, your clothes aren’t actually cleaner and because they are just coated so that the light makes them look brighter or whiter and this coating will affect the absorption of the fabric (not good for towels, cleaning clothes or cloth diapers).

In addition, research has also shown that optical brighteners can also cause allergic reactions, be toxic to small aquatic life and pollute your waterways. Seventh Generation makes it easy to find a detergent and products free of optical brighteners, because their laundry detergents are free of optical brighteners, in addition to being non-toxic, hypo-allergenic and biodegradable. I have been using the detergent on my regular laundry and it cleans well and I know my clothes are actually clean and that the detergent is gentle on the environment.

Clothes washed in a conventional laundry detergent containing optical brighteners will appear to glow under a black light, which is the main reason why it is banned from military clothing, however, detergents free of optical brighteners like Seventh Generation liquid laundry products won’t leave the same glow on your clothing. The experiment below shows two identical organic cotton shirts, but one is washed one in a conventional laundry detergent that contains optical brighteners and the other in Seventh Generation laundry detergent which does not use optical brighteners:

I use mostly cold water to wash laundry. I air dry when you can. I also use laundry cleaner with no phosphates and scents. I need to look into brands that don't have optical brighteners.
