I grew up with a variety of music in my home and I definitely find comfort in the sounds of my childhood. Carol King was a familiar voice often played or sung at home and James Taylor was no stranger either. My earliest memory of Carol King was singing an arrangement of You’ve Got a Friend in school and the excitement my mom had that I was singing a song by an artist from “her generation”. This CD is a memorable recording of a reunion of two accomplished artists at the Troubadour and although almost 30 years have passed since their first time in concert together at the same theater, they still have their same charm and warmth as they perform.
In this recently released CD and DVD of their concert, it is fantastic to hear both Carol King and James Taylor perform together, and You’ve Got a Friend is still a song filled with memories and comfort for me. And a good song never gets old or goes out of date. It was also neat to discover some tunes I was not previously familiar with in addition to hearing new performances of some of their original hits. Whenever I hear acoustic folk and a well written piano arrangement, it seems to slow down time– even if only for a few minutes– and there is something about these artist as well that say hey slow down for a minute, savor what is going on in your life and reflect. And that’s just what I am able to do as I listen.
