Bum Essentials are a one size all-in-two system with Velcro closures. The snap-in inserts are available in an organic cotton/bamboo blend and also in a terry material which is also comprised of a slightly different organic cotton blend. Two inserts come with each diaper and snap together for toddlers, overnight or heavy wetters. I even set one set of the Bum Pads on top of another to use as an overnight diaper and the four inserts got my heavy-wetting toddler through the night.
The inserts do not have a waterproof lining on them so the cover may need to be air dried between changes or switched out if your little one wets through, otherwise, the cover can be reused and a new insert set in place. I like how the inserts snap together, as it makes washing and prepping easier, but wish that the small insert snapped below the larger insert—mainly because it would leave fewer crevices for those messy BMs to get stuck. This is not a huge issue, mainly applicable to transition or loose stools, and may just be my personal preference.
The velcro tabs are highly adjustable and wide for a firm grip, but narrow enough that they aren’t too intrusive; however, they may rub against some baby’s tummies. It seemed to bother my daughter a little the first handful of times we used the diaper, but the velcro does soften some and other than the “learning to sit” stage, tummies probably won’t be leaning forward into the velcro all that much. Most of these comments apply to velcro diapers in general, and I do like to reiterate that I did like the length, adjustability and security of the Velcro.
Overall, it is a reliable diaper with an affordable price tag (considering the organic materials used for the inserts) when used as an AI2 system. If only buying a few diapers it is not the most economical choice, but a competitively priced organic option. I was also able to review a small Bum Bag, which is reversible and has a draw string closure. Although I typically prefer zippered closures, this wetbag was great around the house and to hang on door knobs. I love that it was reversible and the 2 layers of PUL also provide extra protection against leaks. It is also available in a larger size that would fit smaller diaper pails and work to store your diapers until wash day.
