Allens is a name you hear about a lot in the cloth diaper and natural laundry world, and it is available in both a concentrated powder and liquid form. When I first looked into Allen’s detergent I was taken back by it’s price per load compared to other popular detergents, since I didn’t realize how little is required for cloth diapers, particularly for HE washers. 1/4 oz. is recommended for HE washers and you will need approximately a third to a quarter of this amount when washing cloth diapers (so 1/12 – 1/16 of an ounce). So don’t be fooled by the price per quart or gallon like I was at first, because this detergent will last you a long time, even when using the recommended amounts for your regular loads of laundry.
Allens Natural Detergent cleaned well and kept my diapers smelling clean, and is recommended by many popular cloth diaper manufacturers and on many detergent comparison charts. I am no chemist, so although I recognize that the powder version contains sodium bicarbonate, a disinfecting agent, I am not sure which of the ingredients in the liquid version disinfects. Possibly the sodium chloride, which is a salt, but I would assume they would have some sort of ingredient comparable to their powder version. Regardless, cloth diapers don’t technically need to be disinfected during each load so this is still a great, affordable detergent to use (especially if you buy the gallon version!).
You may be skeptical about how well an 1/8 or 1/16 oz. of this detergent can clean, but I will tell you that just from rinsing the film of detergent on my one ounce scoop in the sink caused an unbelievable amount of suds. So that gave me confidence from the first couple of loads that this detergent was concentrated enough that a small amount goes a really long way.
