Diaper Tips Tuesday: Ask the Moms, How Do You Wash Your Cloth Diapers?

We got such great feedback last week, I have another question for you! How do YOU wash your diapers? Hopefully we can all find someone else with a similar wash routine as us to see if they have some tricks up their sleeve that may make our washing more effective or fun!

Please include:
1) How often do you wash your diapers?
2) The type of washer you use (front loader/HE or top loader)?
3) The type of water you have (hard, soft, moderate)?
4) Your detergent(s) of choice?
5) Wash cycles/rinses used
6) Any other things of note? (This may include, but is not limited to, different washers or routines you have used, preferences vs. reality, etc.)

Here is my routine:
1) I wash every 2 days which I find is a perfect balance of conserving water and energy, while avoiding odor and other issues caused by infrequent laundering.
2) I have a HE front loading machine.
3) I have moderately hard water.
4) It depends on the detergent I am reviewing. :-)
5) Cold Rinse. Warm Heavy Duty Cycle, Normal or Heavy Soiled (depending on the load or detergent used). Extra Rinse (usually skip the extra rinse when using soap nuts).

  1. I would love to see what others are doing as I don't feel like I have it all figured out, for sure!

    1) I wash about every 3 days. I have 10 diapers that I mostly use, so when they're all dirty, I wash them :)
    2) I use a top load high-capacity washer
    3) I have moderate water
    4) Currently, I'm using Allen's since my son has sensitive skin. Sometimes I'll add a capful of Melaleuca Sol-u-Mel (tea tree oil)
    5) I use hot wash/cold rinse. Regular cycle, extra rinse
    6) I wash my covers & diapers (bot motherease), fleece liners, and flannel wipes all in the same load.

  2. simplymerry says:

i'm still building my stash and establishing my routine, but here's what it looks like so far.

    1) wash 2-3 days, whenever the diaper stash starts to get low
    2) top load washer
    3) hard water
    4) trying out Crunchy Clean & Rockin Green
    5) washer doesn't have a pre-rinse option so i do a full run on cold/cold w/o detergent (which means two cold rinses); then i do hot wash, and two more cold rinses
    6) I fold my pockets (majority of stash) up when i put them in the pail, and then unfold and unstuff them while putting them into the wash. I don't mind doing this, but I hate having to dig around and fish out covers that can't be dried in the dryer when i move the pile into the dryer. go figure…. :)

Somehow, i don't know if i actually read this somewhere, i got this idea that having the pee sitting against the pul shortens the pul's lifespan. Which is why i fold the diaper up before putting it in the pail (keeping the inner fabric from touching the outer). i also like neatness, so a messy pile of wet and soiled inserts just bugs me. 😛

  3. 1) How often do you wash your diapers? I try to wash every 2 days, but sometimes it extends to 3.

    2) The type of washer you use (front loader/HE or top loader)? I have a front loader HE.

    3) The type of water you have (hard, soft, moderate)? I have moderate water.

    4) Your detergent(s) of choice? Rockin' Green!

    5) Wash cycles/rinses used? I do 2 rinse cycles with no spin and a 2nd rinse using cold water only. Then I do a regular wash using hot water wash and cold water rinse, with a second rinse.

    6) Any other things of note? I try to line dry them as much as possible. All of my one size diapers are on a smaller setting and the inserts don't come out during the wash, so I have to pull those out; except in my Smartipants.

  4. Crystal Biehl says:

    1. I wash every 3 days (I have 25 OS pocket diapers)
    2. Topload maytag washer
    3. softened well water
    4. Purex
    5. Largest load setting and heavy duty wash cycle: 1 cold/cold cycle, then 1 hot/cold with an extra rinse and an extra spin — and I put a little biz in each wash cycle
    6. Love, love, love to hang dry the diapers because the sun is an amazing stain fighter (but that's not always possible when there's snow on the ground). I also just wad the diaper up and throw in the pail–much easier to take out for wash time. I pull out the insert as well–the yuck doesn't bother me.

  5. MooMooKITTEN of Death says:

    1. I wash every 3-4 days, or when the diaper pail is full (50+ OS pockets)
    2. Front loading LG Tromm
    3. Semi hard water–city system
    4. All F&C and Dawn
    5. 1 speed wash with extra water with a squirt of dawn (warm/warm) 1 normal wash with 1/4 of the detergent extra water, stain cycle, extra rinse (hot/cold).

    1) How often do you wash your diapers?
Well since we dont have a big stash yet, everyday! But not to worry i ahve more on the way ;D

    2) The type of washer you use (front loader/HE or top loader)?
    I have a top loader.
    3) The type of water you have (hard, soft, moderate)?
    Semi Hard, :( ahh!
    4) Your detergent(s) of choice?
Rockin Greens Hard Rock for sure!!!
    5) Wash cycles/rinses used
I do a cold wash, than i rock a hot soak (still getting another detergent out) for a hour or longer, another wash- hot and a rinse, but i do have some stinkys so it might change.
    6) Any other things of note? (This may include, but is not limited to, different washers or routines you have used, preferences vs. reality, etc.)
Ive learned that you cant use Tide! No kind of free Tide even! We have soo much build up from Tide its unreal! Tee tree oil and grapeseed extract are and always will be a cloth diapers BFs, and so is the sun when and if you can get them in the sun, and PUL doesnt need to be in the dryer after a couple of times, i dont even put my covers or shells in the dryer anymore! And just be calm if something goes wrong there are tons of CDing mamas that are ready and willing to advise you on washing and brands! 😀 xxx

  7. 1) How often do you wash your diapers?- I was about 15 diapers or so, every 2-3 days
    2) The type of washer you use (front loader/HE or top loader)? toploader
    3) The type of water you have (hard, soft, moderate)? hard
    4) Your detergent(s) of choice? Rockin' Green Hard Rock!
    5) Wash cycles/rinses used- cold rinse, hot wash with 2 tbs of soap, then an extra rinse.
    6) Any other things of note? (This may include, but is not limited to, different washers or routines you have used, preferences vs. reality, etc.)

  8. 1) How often do you wash your diapers?– about every 15 diapers every 2 days or so

    2) The type of washer you use (front loader/HE or top loader)? –top loader

    3) The type of water you have (hard, soft, moderate)? –not sure, probably moderate-hard

    4) Your detergent(s) of choice?–I have been using planet liquid exclusively, but am testing out Rockin Green to see how it does

    5) Wash cycles/rinses used- I HAD been doing a cold wash with planet, hot wash with planet and 2 extra large rinses– with RnG I'm doing a cold rinse, a hot wash, and a regular rinse

    6) Any other things of note? (This may include, but is not limited to, different washers or routines you have used, preferences vs. reality, etc.)–I have used 3 different machines, I can tell you that the stupid machine I have now in a rental place is a stackable–nearly impossible to get the diapers 'shook' into there from the pail liner.

  9. Teresha@Marlie and Me says:

    1) How often do you wash your diapers? every 2 days

    2) The type of washer you use (front loader/HE or top loader)? HE

    3) The type of water you have (hard, soft, moderate)? HARD

    4) Your detergent(s) of choice? Country Save

    5) Wash cycles/rinses used
cold short cycle w/o detergent. Hot Wash with detergent on regular cycle/Cold rinse

    6) Any other things of note? (This may include, but is not limited to, different washers or routines you have used, preferences vs. reality, etc.) I was adding a few drops of TTO to the hot wash as an extra disinfectant, but read it wasn't necessary and can actually cause residue build up

  10. 1 – I wash every 2-3 days, when the stash starts getting low.

    2 – I have a top-loader.

    3 – My water is moderate/hard.

    4 – Rockin Green. 100%!! LOVE it.

5 – Full wash (cold/cold) no detergent, Full wash (hot/hot) with detergent. Once a month or so, soak for about an hour with Rockin Green (after both washes), then rinse. I only put them in the dryer once a month or so, to seal up the PUL.

6 – Tip 1: I NEVER pull the inserts out of my pocket dipes. Never. They always come out on their own during the first cycle. Huge time saver as well as eliminates some of the "ick factor".

Tip 2: I always empty my wetbag into the washer, then toss it in on top. Everything gets nice and clean that way. I do have a second bag, though, since I prefer to line dry and it takes a little longer than using the dryer. This ensures one bag is always clean.

  11. Mama Christina says:

    1) How often do you wash your diapers? – Every 3 days. I'd prefer every other day, but we part-time EC and it seems silly to wash so few diapers!

    2) The type of washer you use (front loader/HE or top loader)? – We have an old top loader, but we're getting rid of it this fall – anyone have any recommendations?

    3) The type of water you have (hard, soft, moderate)? – Naturally hard but we have a whole-house filter, so it's softened.

    4) Your detergent(s) of choice? – I usually use soap nuts but I've been reviewing Maggie's soap nuts liquid and I think I'm switching to it. I love it.

    5) Wash cycles/rinses used – Cold wash without soap, Hot wash with soap, extra cold rinse.

    6) Any other things of note? (This may include, but is not limited to, different washers or routines you have used, preferences vs. reality, etc.) – I vastly prefer to line dry the diapers. It doesn't always happen (mostly due to time constraints or weather) but I really prefer it!

  12. GirlHouse says:

    1. Every 2 days
    2) Top loader
    3) Softened
    4) Rocking Green!! LOVE IT!!
    5) I turn up the temp on th hot water heater. Cold rinse. Hot wash on the highest water level, with an extra rinse at the end. I'm starting to experiment with not running the extra rinse.
Once a month I will do a hot soak for a few hours.
    Line dry everything.

  13. 1) I used to wash every other day, but now that I have a larger diaper stash I wash about every three days.
    2) I have a top loading HE washer.
    3) I have soft water.
    4) I used to use Tide Free & Clear, but now I prefer liquid Charlie's Soap.
    5) I do a cold rinse cycle then a hot wash/double cold rinse using detergent.
    6) I hang all my diapers and inserts to dry in order to save money and also get the diapers to last longer.

  14. How often do you wash your diapers? I try to wash every other day or every 3rd day
The type of washer you use (front loader/HE or top loader)? I have an older top loader
The type of water you have (hard, soft, moderate)? We have very hard well water
Your detergent(s) of choice? I've used Allen's without too much issue (that I noticed- we were having a rash issue at the time and never quite figured out what caused it), All Feee & Clear with minor build up from using too much, and now I'm giving Tiny Bubbles a try.
Wash cycles/rinses used Cold Rinse, Heavy, Hot Wash/Cold Rinse with Detergent, Hot Light Wash/Cold Rinse with no Detergent
Any other things of note? Typically everything gets dried on medium with the exception of PUL Pockets and Covers. On sunny days when I time my laundry right I line dry everything with elastic and then fluff them up for about 30 minutes on medium afterwards.

I also use half a cap of Calgon every load to help with the hard water!

  15. I'm a little slow this week, but still wanted to share my wash routine.

    1) Every 2-3 days
    2) Top load
    3) Hard city water
    4) Purex
    5) Cold rinse, Hot/Cold heavy duty wash with extra rinse
    6) I try to line dry as often as possible and am finding I really enjoy it! Per suggestions I am not drying my pockets in the dryer as often anymore, just hanging them with my covers.

I'm hoping to add Calgon to my routine, I just have to remember to buy some one of these days. I've been so curious about Rockin' Green, but it seems so expensive…?

  16. HeidiMcGBlaue says:

    1. I wash every 2 days for smell & stash quantity.
    2. Top Loader- old style
    3. Hard water treated with a water softener
    4. Crunchy Clean
    5. Cold rinse (nothing added), Hot Wash/Cold Rinse with 1.5-2 TBS of Crunchy Clean detergent (depending on stink/dirtiness) & the softener cup full of vinegar
    6. I spray every poopy diaper with BacOut
