Princess Potty & Pirate Potty Book Review

We have been working on communicating about my daughter’s “elimination” more frequently the past few weeks although I have been trying since she turned one. My approach is to have potty chairs and seats around, talk about when she has gone, if she needs to go, and having her tag along with me whenever I need to go. So basically, I am trying to ease the transition into potty training by having it be a familiar concept and topic, without pressuring her before she is ready. It also helps that we use cloth diapers, so she knows when she is wet and usually asks to be changed.

I had the pleasure to review the new Princess Potty and Pirate Potty books by Scholastic and am thrilled to have another way to incorporate the topic of potty training in to our daily routine, and reading is a big one. We love to read books and although my daughter is 100% girl, she loves cars and pirates so both books are fun for us to read together. She has been asking to use the potty more often and although I am not saying these books are going to miraculously potty train her, these books are fun-to-read and provide positive ways of discussing potty training with your toddler.

I loved the thickness of the pages as they were thicker than preschool books, but thinner than board books. Perfect for toddlers fine-tuning their motors skills, but sturdy enough to avoid rips! There are also punch out hats in both books, a tiara in the Princess Potty book and a pirate hat in the Pirate Potty book as well as stickers to reward your little one and keep potty training a positive experience for everyone involved. I love how the stories cleverly and humorously incorporate a fairytale storyline and an X-marks the spot in the Pirate potty book so I would imagine these stories would still be enjoyable for your little one to read after they are potty trained.

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
Both books provide a helpful, step-by-step story that introduces girls & boys to the concept of toilet training. Pirate Potty is a pirate-themed, toilet-training book that is fit for the little swashbuckler in your life!  Includes a pirate’s hat and reward stickers! Princess Potty follows the same theme…a toilet-training book that is fit for the Royal Highness in your life!  This book includes tiara and reward stickers!

  1. Well, I have a boy so I think the pirate one would be best for him. He is 7 months old and occasionally uses the potty after naptimes, or if we check his diaper and he is dry. No pressure, no rewards. We'll see how it progresses from there.

  2. I have a boy and a girl, so either is great!! We bought a potty but haven't taken it out of the box yet. I think once they turn 1 I will try to incorporate it into our daily routine to see if they need to go. No pressure…

  12. I would choose the princess book.

I don't have an approach because my daughter is 14 months old. I intend to get a potty for her and let her get used to sitting on it when I go to the bathroom. She follows me in anyways.

  35. I would have to go with the pirate potty because of my boy! I, like you, will be including it in our daily lives. I will have my son go to the bathroom with us and have a potty around all the time. Then when is is around 18 months, we will do the potty training in 3 days. Hope it works!

My son would love the Pirate book. Arrrgh…. He is 18 mo old and has just recently even noticed he wears a diaper :) LOL We have alot of coverless time around the house and after he's wet I say "did you pee?" He will touch the front of his diaper. Occasionally he will touch his diaper before or while he is going. I think we are headed in the right direction, but still have a ways to go as well.

  82. Since I have a girl, I'd love the princess potty book, but I think the pirate book would be great, too. I have no doubt that my little girl will love pirates, her daddy does! I truthfully haven't thought about potty training since my little one is under a year, but you've got me thinking about it with your post. I may have to go out and get a potty chair. I'd love to see you do some potty chair reviews.

The pirate one for my boy. Well this is my first time around so Not sure of my style. But we do have the baby signs potty training kit and he loves the video and the book. He knows all the signs they teach. I have taken him to the potty and he will sit, but we are not consistant. I work full time and he's not super interested, still young. But we will get back on track soon, I hope.

My toddler would probably like the pirate book the best. Even though, she's a girl…she's not much of the "princess" type. My approach with potty training is not to push it. I think kids aren't developmentally and physically able to start until 2 years of age. I've got a potty in the house and a book or two so she'll get used to the objects being around but we haven't had that 2nd birthday yet.

Our approach: Let them take the lead and follow that. I know they won't go to college in diapers! However, w/ #3 on the way this summer, we are pushing my oldest (who will be 3.5 when baby gets here) a tad harder than we have in the past 😉 I think #2 will follow quickly, he loves the potty, unlike big brother, lol

  133. I would like pirate potty. I am currently watching for signs that my son is ready to start potty training. He is now waking from nap pretty dry and needing less diapers due to increased bladder control. I am going to get him a potty chair for his 2nd bday and see if he is interested. I don't want to push him if he is not ready. I also have a rule in the house that he cannot flush the toilet or touch toilet paper unless he goes on the toilet.

Princess Potty would be great for my 20month girl. I've been introducing her to the toliet. We're not going to use the little potty chair. (I think that confused my son when I did that.) She's starting to get it a little bit. I put her in the toliet when I change her dipes (esp when she wakes up and before bed) and before baths. We'll go full swing this summer in her underwear. I think that will work the best because I've done both (training pants vs underwear).

  193. My Princess would love the girly version. She is 12 months old, and part-time ECing. She forgets to cue pretty frequently, but when given the chance, she'll use the potty. I am ready to be done with diapers, even if it means putting away my fluffy cloth!

  194. My son would like the Pirate Potty best and my approach has been to talk about the potty a lot and wait until he is ready to use it. We are just getting going with him wanting to use it!
