When I was pregnant with my daughter I had two 5-inch thick pregnancy books, supplemental materials on natural birth and I spent hours reading information online. I took some classes that were offered at the hospital as well and I felt that I was sufficiently educated and prepared; however, as my due date got closer, I was overwhelmed. I felt that the important information on labor, breastfeeding and newborn care was mixed in with other interesting, but what seemed like “extra” information at the time and got a little anxious.
The Laugh and Learn childbirth, breastfeeding and newborn care DVDs did a great job of explaining everything in a very clear, but informative manner. Sheri Bayles was witty, easy to understand and listen to, and even though most of this information was easy to swallow, the DVDs allow the luxury of being able to pause it, watch it when it is convenient for you and press rewind. You can watch these at your own pace and revisit them whenever you get that anxiety as your due date creeps closer.
These DVDs are more convenient and cost effective for most families than traditional classes, although there are benefits to going to classes as well. These DVDs are a great starting and ending point when couples are learning the essential “need-to-know” information, especially when expecting their first child, and is a refresher for families expecting an additional child. Looking back at my pregnancy I think that I would have liked to watch these DVDs in the 1st trimester to get the “big picture” and have a better idea about what I would like to look into further, then give them another run through (or two) in the third trimester when I would really need the information fresh in my mind.
The book that accompanies these DVDs is less than an inch thick! This means that you can easily pop it in your purse to read in the waiting room and it has all of the information from the DVDs, plus a little extra information tucked into a portable version of the Childbirth DVD. It is clearly organized and has good illustrations and diagrams to help support the text. I would definitely recommend this book and the DVDs to anyone expecting or trying to conceive and plan on watching them again when we get pregnant with our second baby!
