How Many Cloth Wipes Do I Need?

If you are just starting with cloth wipes this may be one of the first questions you have. I think that cloth wipes stashes vary even more than diaper stashes, because they are so affordable and can be used for more than just wiping bottoms. If you are only using cloth wipes with your cloth diapers I would recommend having 15-18 wipes for every dozen diapers you own. This will give you one wipe per diaper change, plus a couple of extras for messy clean-ups and to get you through laundry day. Most families will probably be happy with 24-36 wipes per child and I recommend having a few different fabrics and thicknesses for different tasks.

Wipes are available in a variety of fabrics including flannel, sherpa, velour, hemp, bamboo, organic cotton, fleece, terry and combinations of any of these fabrics in two-layer wipes. They also come in different shapes and sizes, and I recommend 8X8 or 6X8 (to fit in wipes warmers and cases). Any size will do the job, but I prefer having the 7-8 inch surface area for cleaning especially because I have larger hands. Knit is also a fabric that is not commonly sold (that I have seen), but can easily be made by hand from T-shirts, undershirts and things of those nature that can be repurposed into something functional. If you do not have a sewing machine or serger to finish the edges they will fray and wear out quicker, but it would still be a frugal and functional way to use those old shirts.

  2. I have 60 wipes made by a WAHM on I have 15 each of sherpa, bamboo velour, terry, and cotton velour. The other side is flannel on all of them. The bamboo velour ones are by far our favorite! I even ordered 12 2 sided bamboo wipes to use as "tissues". (by special request of my HUSBAND!!) We use them as washclothes, TP, wipes for baby, tissues, and burp clothes (in emergencies)

  3. I have to measure but I have different sizes – square, rectangle and different materials – fleece, bamboo velour, sherpa, etc. My faves for poopy messes are the ones I bought from a WAHM on Diaperswappers – they're made from fleece and are rectangle in size… LOVE LOVE cloth wipes! Now, what to do with all those sposie wipes we still have by the case…
