Diaper Tips Tuesday: How Many Cloth Diapers are in an Ideal Stash?

Week 2:
How many cloth diapers are in an ideal stash per child? What is your reality?

Stashes come in all different sizes. Whether you are a part-time cloth diapering family, on a tight budget, or decked out for multiple children in diapers there are no two stashes exactly alike. I think, however, that an ideal stash per child is 18-24 diapers. Yes, you can get away with less and it’s great having more, but that should be a ballpark to work towards when building a cloth diaper stash.

Newborns go through 10-12 diapers a day and as infants get older you will go down to around 5-6 diapers a day. So this being said 18-24 diapers would be a day and a half worth for a newborn and get you through 2-3 days when your child is older while allowing you to have enough while the laundry is being done. Smaller stashes will mean daily washing and larger stashes will allow you to wash every 2-3 days and still have time to line dry your diapers and still have enough diapers to tie you over.

What is my reality? I have almost lost count, but have the following in my current rotation:
approximately 3 dozen one size, 10 large, 5 medium, a handful of prefolds and covers and about 10 out of rotation. She has almost grown out of most of the mediums so we will have more out of rotation soon. This brings up the point that 18-24 diapers IN ROTATION is the ideal stash, so this does not account for how many diapers you may have total. If you use predominantly sized diapers (small, medium, large) you will have a larger total number in your stash, but will still want 18-24 diapers in your child’s size at a time.

What is your opinion of an ideal stash? What is your dream stash and what is your reality? Comment below or link up your blog entry on this topic to the MckLinky below. The McLinky will remain the same for the whole month so if you wrote all of the November topics in one post you only need to link up once. If you are writing separate, short blog articles, link of each one each week so everyone can share!

  1. I have 4 doz. small prefolds, 3 doz. large prefolds, 4 doz. cloth wipes, 1 wet bag and 9 diaper covers in almost every size equaling 3 doz. covers.

With this stash we do laundry about every 2-3days.

I found I need a lot less than what some say you may need. Although my daughter is 9 months so we use less than a newer baby would. I probably use about 12 prefolds, a couple of AI2's and pockets and wash every 2 days or so.

  3. I'm wondering what kind of diapers your mediums are….Melanie is 2.5 & very tall for her age, but she still wears a lot of mediums easily.

  4. We have a split stash: half pockets and half prefolds/covers. My husband refuses to use pockets (they leak unless they're super stuffed, and since the cover can't be reused he prefers efficient prefolds), so I need a full stash of prefolds, which I think is at least 24 infant prefolds, and about 8 covers. We also have a half stash of pocket diapers (15 one-size, which is more than we need with the prefolds on hand), plus a few odds and ends of other styles. We're waiting to see if she'll need the premium size prefold, but she's already growing into size 2 duo wraps, so that means another 8 covers. I keep several dozen wipes on hand, because you never want to run out! (Never want to pay for them either, though, so most of them are homemade.)

  5. We have about a dozen BG 2.0 that my son uses. I fixed them up and they aren't pretty but they work. For my DD we have a dozen gerber dsq prefolds and 3 thirsties duo covers, 6 baby land, 4 BG 3.0 and 4 Happy Heinys. My husband hates prefolds and covers so I am always looking for more all in ones or one size diapers.

  6. I have a 3 AIOs (Dream-Ez and a WAHM), 2 fitteds (Kiwi Pie), and 16 pocket OS and sized that I keep in regular rotation. My ideal stash is one that never stops growing. I love pockets the most and BG, FB, HH, and Monkeysnuggles are my FAVORITE!

I agree with having 18-24 diapers in hand. I have 18 bumGenius OS, 2 bumGenius AIO, 4 GroBaby, and 9 wahm-made OS (mostly used for soiled diapers-leaks). I have some prefold in hand but I haven't used them with 2snappis. I think my stash is pretty decent but I love adding more to my stash!

  8. The Redhead Riter says:

    wow

that doesnt sound like enough diapers

i guess i'm paranoid, but i would probably have twice or three times that many!

  9. i have 15 diapers. 14 are pockets (12 sweet pea, 1 BG 3.0, 1 OS fuzzibuns) and I have 1 bamboo prefold with a cover (both from Booroi)

I would love more….but i dont think i could ever have too many! 5 more sounds ideal
