How Much Will I Need to Get Started?

You can CD for as little as $200 if you exclusively use cotton prefolds. This is assuming your child will use 2-3 sizes of prefolds and covers, and you will wash them every 1-2 days.

Even if you buy high quality one-size diapers, you can easily keep it under $350. 18 one-size diapers @ $17.95 ea. = $323.10. 18 diapers are the perfect number to wash every other day with full-time cloth diapering and having a few to get you through while the rest are in the laundry. You can have more in your stash (addicts like me) or make due with fewer if you are willing to wash them more often. Compare this to the $1500-3500 you will spend PER CHILD on disposable diapers. This is an investment that will make it through multiple children and make a difference in the environment.

If you choose to use AIO or pocket diapers you will spend closer to $500, however, you do not need to spend all the money at once like you would with one size diapers. Purchase the smallest size your child needs first, then a stash of the next size up as he/she grows.

Want to save even more money? Consider buying used diapers or sewing your own. See my links to tutorials and diaper patterns in the sidebar.
